Are the Big 3 Too..Big?

When I refer to “The Big 3″ I don’t mean those of WWII, but those of modern day technology. Of course, I am sure you can already guess which ones I am referring to but for information’s sake I will list them nonetheless.
- Microsoft
- Yahoo!
Now, folks, I don’t wanna sound like a hippie or constantly paranoid, but it seems to me that the Big 3 are just getting too big and powerful. I mean, just look at the track record of these companies and where they have their hands.
For one, Microsoft makes everything that is awesome + electronic but they also have the some of the biggest server sites in the world, make hundreds of programs and is a household name that can be considered the “jumpstart of the Internet age”.
Then there is Google who not only defines the way we design and maintain websites (to stay in their google listings), but they have translation services (Google Translator), ad services (Adsense) and a browser (Chrome) that is used everyday all around the world. Being the only real contender in their bracket, Google has almost zero competition and has settled in to start new things and branch out like Microsoft has already done.
Finally, Yahoo! has been there and done that. They were up there with Microsoft, although behind the scenes, is still a major force in today’s market. Yahoo revolutionized the system with their mail system and news combined. With arcade games and the infamous Babel Fish, Yahoo has contributed greatly to the internet bringing it to be the primary source of information that we have today. However, they have begun to decline in usage and are losing popularity.
I could go on all day and list every single thing that these companies have dabbled in but I think you get the point. Could we see our internet movement constricted because someone doesn’t think we should go there or see this? With ISPs beginning to get in on the mess, in the years to come I believe we will have a wild ride in store for us. What do you believe will happen if these companies continue to gain strengh like they have been doing for years?
I obviously know there are many big companies out there, I just listed one of the bigger ones to prove my point.Category: Online
