VHS Finally Dead

So here we have it: VHS tapes are no longer “coming soon to a retailer near you!”.  They had a long run though, probably the longest running format of media ever, lasting over twenty years.

You may not have seen many VHS tapes being sold near you, but the last major company to do so, Distribution Video Audio (or DVA), stationed in Palm Harbor, Florida, sold the last of it’s stock this month. Before now, DVA sold tapes for cheap, making 20 million dollars per year in the process, but now that DVDs and other media such as Blu-ray have taken over, very few people are buying them.

But will the DVD last nearly as long? According to the president of the DVA, Ryan Kugler, “The DVD will be obsolete in three or four years, no doubt about it. Everything will be Blu-ray.”  That seems rather fast, but only time will tell.

And where will all these “forgotten souls” go? DVA says the leftover merchandise will either be thrown away or given out. Time to stock up on VHS, like there’s a half an inch of snow in Georgia!
